"Nothing happens until something moves." ~Albert Einstein
Purpose and Engagement
In our modern society, humans are simultaneously complicating and simplifying their lives through the use of technology, machines, and other inventions. With these new inventions come new problems. Rube Goldberg initially developed his complex machines to critique the over-complication of simple tasks through technology- he accomplished these critiques by combining mechanical works of art with pointed satirical messages and narratives. Satire has exploded in recent years as a way to engage people with humor, but still drive them towards action. Your work in this project will be to combine the mechanical engineering construction of the Rube Goldberg Machine with the sophisticated satirical techniques necessary to critique a modern issue of your choice. Make them funny....but make them mean something too.
Content Knowledge: EnergyWe will be covering the following energy topics throughout this project. Please see the The Rube Project Sheet for timeline:

ProductAs an individual you will be tasked with imagining, designing, and creating a Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM). Your design is to include each of the six simple machines as well as your choice of one, or more, of the following challenge steps: 360° loop, time warp box (an enclosed box that keeps a rolling object inside of it for 10 seconds before releasing it), and/or a 720° spiral that is open on the inside. Your RGM must include satirical techniques (target, message, and devices) and be displayed with a satirical cartoon (or other form of satire...written, visual, perhaps even video? that reinforces the message of your machine.
