"Music is the arithmetic of sounds as optics is the geometry of light." ~Claude Debussy
Purpose and Engagement
What is light? At first, this seems like a simple question, but let it sink in for a moment... What if I told you that light, the "stuff" we get from the sun, can carry both energy AND information? It is both the way the sun delivers energy to the world, making life possible, and it is one of the important ways that we learn about the world- through our sense of sight.
Every year the American Association of Physics Teachers (AATP), yes we have a club, hosts a High School Physics Photo Contest in which students compete in two different categories. The first is Natural Photos in which students photograph an everyday situation that may demonstrate a variety of physics phenomena. The second category is Contrived Photos in which students take a photograph of a phenomenon that has been set up to show a particular physics concept. Through our understanding of light and physical phenomena we will host our own Photographs of Physics contest!

Deliverables
- Project Final Product:
- You will take either a Natural or Contrived photograph of a physics phenomenon that pertains to our unit of study (optics/waves). Accompanying your photograph will be a relevant title and a written description that clearly communicates your understanding of the concept you are portraying.
- Photographic Representation for Each Unit of Study (Reflection, Refraction, Color, Light Waves, Light Emission)
- You will take either a Natural or Contrived photograph that demonstrates a concept under each unit of study.
- Exhibition Planning
- Exhibition
- Project Reflection and Digital Portfolio Update
